3.42 - Caged Bird

“You sure you don’t want to come out with us? You know we’re going to have a ton of fun,” Elias offers one last time.

“Nah, I’m just going to do some thinking.”

“You good bro? You’ve been doing a lot of thinking lately,” he plops down on the couch next to me.

“Not really, but it’s okay to not be good. Don’t worry about it.”

“I’m always here if you need to talk,” he cups his hand to his ear mimicking Hulk Hogan.

“Thank you, but I promise I’m okay.”

“If you change your mind, just let me know. You know I don’t judge anyone, except people who put pineapple on pizza.”

“I put pineapple on pizza.”

“I don’t judge you, because you’re my brother. I judge the rest with my mighty gavel of justice,” he laughs as his phone vibrates signaling his ride has come.

“Well, I’ll see you later,” I hop up to close the door behind him.

“Can I have a hug,” he pauses just outside the door.

“Sure,” I know the hug is more for me than him.

“You can hold on as long as you want,” he assures me.

“Alright, that’s enough,” I break after a few seconds.

“Nah, just a little more,” he squeezes me tighter. “I just love you so much.”

“Thanks,” I force a smile.

“You know I give good hugs. You feel better already,” Elias puts his hand on my shoulder. “Stop being so hard on yourself. We all need other people to help carry our burdens.”

“Thanks bro.”

“You’re welcome, I love you,” and just like that he’s sprinting down the hall. “Say it back dickhead,” he calls from the elevator.

“I love you too moss head,” I shout back knowing our neighbor will leave a note in the morning.

He waves before disappearing into the elevator. What can I say? He’s like an emotional savant. The hug really did help me feel a little better. It didn’t solve all of my problems, but it did make me feel a little better. Think a little clearer. A reminder that there are people who care about me unconditionally.

Magic caused all of this, I’m pretty sure it could be a solution as well. I log onto the Occult web and begin my search. It doesn’t take long before I find some crystals that let you wipe your memory. The problem is they wipe all of your memories, not just one event. There are a few wizards with offices in the city that claim they can wipe traumatic events. The problem is they all look like creeps and sell courses on how you can start a business wiping traumatic events. I have to assume, they all bought the same course at some point, and just want to creep through memories. I suppose I can just get a therapist and have a head start on that trip to Arkham Asylum. I could probably give The Riddler a run for his money.

Footsteps distract me from my search. I creep over to the kitchen as silently as possible, making sure my own footsteps aren’t heard. I grab a kitchen knife, not the best weapon available to me. I know I can summon my normal blades, and magic helped my shoulder heal flawlessly. Still, I’m not trying to summon them. I’m just trying to defend my apartment. I’m not sure how someone could have gotten up this high without being noticed, maybe they’ve been hiding for a while and made a mistake.

Slowly I move through the apartment checking each room. Bathroom, clear, laundry, clear, Elias’ room, clear. The last spot is my bedroom. With all the crap I’ve been through lately, I can’t help but wonder if someone has come to get me. Some vampire wanting revenge, some kid saying I killed their parents, Wererats blaming me for Mercer’s death or someone trying to finish everyone off after the mall thing. I really went from zero enemies to an entire list in less than a year. I ease the door open and spot a shadow sitting on the edge of my bed.

“Hands up,” it obliges. I flick the light switch.

“Surprise,” Destiny feigns excitement.

“Why are you here,” I cut to the chase. I need to be firm with her so I can move on.

“I just realized I’ve never seen your bedroom before. It’s really neat. You’re a lot cleaner than I thought you would be. You know, men have this reputation of being dirty,” she’s just talking with no point. “You could be kind of sloppy sometimes, like when you cook, there would always be a mess, but you did clean up after yourself, and your clothes are always very neat. Coordinated colors, different belts to match the primary colors of your outfits. It’s no wonder your family thought you were gay. Painting the room blue, nice touch. I should have known blue would be your favorite color, you always wear it in some way. You even drive a blue car,” and she’s out of steam.

“Why did you come here?”

“Just checking in,” she smiles.

“I’m an adult. I don’t need you to check in on me.”

“Maybe I’m the one who needs to be checked in on,” she suddenly can’t look me in the eye.

“You’ve spent the last few weeks telling me to get out of your life, but now you’re breaking into my home because you want me to check in on you?”

“It sounds crazy when you say it that way.”

“Every moment of our relationship that you never considered a relationship has been crazy,” I catch the irritation in my voice and try to cool my temper. I sit the kitchen knife on my dresser to show I’m not hostile.

“I can see where you’re coming from,” she nods to herself.

“What do you want from me? Every time I try to embrace you, I get pushed away. Yet you won’t let me have anyone or anything else in my life without you. You keep dragging me deeper into the world you live in and any time I try to claw myself back to reality here you come, breaking in and dragging me back,” I throw my arms in the air so she knows I’m done.

“I took my shoes off when I came in, you’ve got carpets. I didn’t want to mess them up.”

“But, what, do you,” I point at her, “want, from me,” I point to myself.

She sits there silently, “I want you in my life,” she yells out when she can see my frustration.

“No, you don’t. You’ve shown that over and over again. I was just too dumb to see it.”

“Love is hard for me. I’m all messed up. PTSD and all that shit. I’ve been left and abandoned so many times before that I’ve been trying to push you away, before you can leave,” she forces the words out so fast my ears have trouble keeping up.

“No.”

“What do you mean?”

“I’m done with this Destiny. You can’t even apologize for treating me like trash.”

“I’m sorry.”

“No, you aren’t. We’ve been through this twice now. You treat me like trash, we break up. Then I apologize, and you take me back, because I’m too dumb to see it’s you with the issue. Wait,” I pause and tap a finger to my head, “I just remembered we can’t break up because you don’t believe we’ve ever been together anyway. I just run your errands, act as bait, work as your digital assistant. You see why I feel used in our relationship? There’s nothing in it for me. I get nothing from being with you, except pain. So please don’t come in here telling me you’re sorry if you don’t mean it,” I’m not sure where I’m finding these words, but I mean them. “You said it’s hard for you to love because of things in your past, right? Well what does any of that have to do with me? I never cheated on you, put a hand on you, even yelled at you before you broke in tonight. Either we’re going to be together, and you’re going to stop carrying all this extra baggage around or we’re just not going to be near each other. I love you! I love you! It hurts me every day because I have never loved someone so much and I can’t do anything about it. But, I don’t love your baggage and I don’t love being with you.”

We just stare at each other for the next few minutes. I’ve said what I need to say, and she has to accept it or move on. I don’t know what’s going through her mind, but she hasn’t killed me yet so I guess she’s considering it. She stands up and walks to the window, still not saying anything. In a blink she’s standing in front of me again.

I can feel the heat from her nostrils hitting my face. I close my eyes bracing for the punch I know is coming, but it never comes. I open my eyes and she’s still standing there without saying anything. We would often sit together in silence, just enjoying each other’s company, but the silence was menacing now. She slams her lips against mine and I give in right away. Our tongues dance and I need a deep breath when we finally stop.

“I really am sorry. If you decide to call me, I’ll be better,” she slips her shoes on and sits on the edge of the window.

“You can use the door,” I start to lead her through the house.

“Have a good night Bluebird,” she steps into the hallway.

“Bluebird,” I ask in confusion.

“Because you always wear blue and you’re a caged bird.”

“Caged bird?”

“Because you can be free, you just don’t know how yet.”

“Alright. Have a good night,” I hate when she starts talking in vampire mumbo jumbo.

“Bye,” she heads down the same hallway Elias did an hour ago.

3.41 - Destiny Deferred

I let my legs dangle freely over the ledge of the roof. Not too long ago I wouldn’t be sitting on a ledge like this because I was afraid. This is the same club I met Destiny at. It only seemed right to come here and try digesting everything that happened in the last few days. I’ve never contemplated suicide before, no matter how bad things got, and things are worse than ever this time around. Still, I couldn’t bring myself to do it even if the urge came to the surface. I always feel like things will get better if I just work hard enough. Out work everyone else, that’s how I’ve always made it through life; but there’s no clear way to work harder right now.

After the ambush, I witnessed my first Ogres, they were massive, like giants. Bigger than anything I’d ever seen, but mentally they were like savage children controlled by their hunger. We all moved to the top level and treated the wounded. Everyone else, well the Ogres just ate them. The entire bodies, just scarfed them down. When it was all done the group of mages, wizards, or whatever cast some kind of spell on them. They just followed orders and got into the back of a massive semi-truck and drove off. I didn’t bother asking anyone, because this whole Elder Scrolls chapter of my life is done. I assume the reason we never find bodies of magical creatures is that there are Ogre cleanup crews around the city, maybe some demon dogs or something. I don’t know, it’s none of my business anymore. I don’t want anything to do with it.

I tried to turn myself in. I’ve killed six vampires that nobody will be looking for, but I killed a human. I killed a person. Something like that massive battle can’t be covered up; someone should be asking questions. That’s what I thought, instead, the news covered it as a massive fight between different gangs in the city and an explosion caused by a gas leak. There were minor injuries, but no deaths, police are investigating. The whole thing just, got covered up. Nobody knows I killed this person, and I can’t even confess because there’s no evidence. I just have to carry this…this, this whatever it is with me forever.

All of this is her fault. I was just head over heels in love with her. Madly in love just means I was hopelessly blind, silly and dense to everything around me. I let her mess my whole life up. I’ve been missing days at work and ducking out early; now I’m on thin ice with the boss. I was willing to sacrifice everything for her. I almost died for her, more than once. I put myself in these stupid situations. She didn’t mess my life up; I did that to myself and what do I have to show for it?

Thirteen showers in the past four days and I still can’t wash this blood off of my hands. I still see it, the blood and brains on my shoes. No number of showers or wash cycles will wash this blood away. I could swim through Lake Michigan and still, this blood will not come clean. The water in all of the oceans would not wipe it clean. It’s almost as if I have become the blood, it’s part of me, and I am part of it. I understand that war is bloody business but my eyes were not ready to witness such horrors. I can’t believe I called this a war, that’s the same kind of nonsense that they were all speaking when seeking revenge. Revenge brings nothing but more violence.

This whole thing feels like I’ve been living someone else’s life this entire time I’ve been with her. I don’t even feel at home in my own home. I just can’t find any traces of who I was before. Despite that I don’t know if I can be without her in some way. My world has been altered to the point I can’t function the way I used to. I can’t pretend magic doesn’t exist, or my mailwoman isn’t an Elf, there’s an entire internet for this crap. As much pain and confusion as this has brought me, I don’t know if I can go back to a normal life again.

She’s just so damned hard to love. She rebukes any attempts at affection I try to make. Then she’ll turn around and pretend that I’m hers to own, like a pet. Does she want me in her life or not? She can tell me why I’m trash in the parking lot, then give Vicky death stares for having the nerve to share a drink with me. What the hell is wrong with her? I can’t read her, and any time I think I can she just changes the code on me. I need to just, separate from her and never go near her again. I should have broken up with her so long ago, or not tried to get her back. But I was just attracted. She’s beautiful, but that wasn’t it. No, I was attracted to the danger, the strangeness of it all. It was new, exciting, and I reached for it, and I got burnt.

No, none of that is my problem. My problem is the same thing it has always been. I’m afraid, of everything. I don’t want people to see the real me, so I just do what they expect. I’m afraid of just being me. Now, I’m just afraid that I’ve gone so far, I can’t go back to who I used to be. The thing is, I was afraid then too. I’m afraid of the future, I’m afraid of the past. I’m afraid of the past and I don’t know why. I’m not okay, and I afraid that it might be okay.

If I’m going to make it through this, I need to change. I need to make a promise. I won’t be afraid anymore. No, fear is good, it keeps us honest. No, I promise myself that if I don’t like something, I’ll change it. I promise I’ll always just be me, that’s all I can be. I promise I’ll accept things I can’t change, but only after I try. Yeah, I can do that.

3.40 - Mall War

“Want a beer? You look like you could use one,” Vicky offers me one.

I initially decline but spot Destiny and decide to have one, “sure.”

“How you holdin’ up,” she asks between small sips.

“Like crap,” an honest answer.

“Well, you should feel like crap.”

“Okay, maybe I’ll just be leaving after all,” I could have gotten that from Destiny.

“No," she grabs my arm. “What I mean is, that you’re still good inside. You’ve still got a nice shiny aura around you. For gods’ sake, you watched a man die, then you killed a vamp. I know they’re dead, but they’re still people, or were. That’s two people.”

“Thanks. Have you always had an Irish accent?”

“Slight, my parents are from Ireland, it comes out when I’m drunk, or emotional. Immigrant parents and all that. If you laugh, I’ll have a tree spirit haunt you.”

“Nah, it’s kind of cute.”

“Careful now, your old half dead ball and chain might want a piece of my flesh if you keep talking that way. I don’t want to give it to her, at least not without a fight,” she finishes her beer and stands. “But if you ever want to get in touch with your spirit, or mine, call me. I’ll show you that you’re still a good man,” Vicky runs a finger up my arm before walking away.

Wait, does she like me? I kind of like her too. We’re both into computers, she can show me some really cool stuff. I didn’t even know about the Occult Web until she told me. A whole dark web, but for magic users and the supernatural. Crazy. I strap on my backpack and consider calling her later. Maybe she likes to play video games too.

In an instant, my whole world turns black and the only thing I can hear is the ringing in my ears penetrated only by a distant fire alarm. Something warm and wet lands on my face causing me to open up my eyes. I realize the chaos going on around me. Someone is attacking the Wererats, masks, big knives, guns, magic, anything that looks deadly. Someone blew a massive hole through the wall. The attackers are masked but some are vampires without a doubt, others seem mostly human but there are a few odd shapes here and there. A whip snaps violently in the air with no sound, drawing blood from a Wererat in the distance. That’s when I realize it was blood that dropped on my face. I didn’t get time to digest what I was witnessing or figure out if it was my blood or not before the whip was speeding towards me.

All the training with Destiny didn’t prepare me to dodge a whip. The whip slapped across my chest before I could get out of the way. The whip didn’t even cut through my shirt, but I could feel every inch of it pushing the air out of my chest. I can’t even scream out in pain. I just barely registered the pain of the first lash before the second comes. This time across my back. I try to summon my blades to fight back but the pain is too much for me to concentrate. All that training was worthless because I couldn’t take a hit.

Fuck training, on my hands and knees I just launched my body sideways at my attacker's feet. I managed to catch them off guard, losing their balance and coming to the floor with me. I just started to pound at the mask on their face as they tried pushing me away. Forgetting how to throw a punch I just pounded on them like a baby wanting more food until they stopped fighting.

Feeling my chest and back caused instant pain as I recognized the raised welts across my body. Standing up brought horror as my senses started to flood back at once. They hadn’t just attacked The Wererats. They attacked the entire mall. A second hole had been blasted through the wall opening up the den into the entire mall. Fighting is taking place throughout and things are not going well.

I need to get out of here is all I can think as I break into a full sprint. Almost as if blindsided by a truck I’m tossed aside and ragdolled to the floor. Standing above me in the same black jumpsuit and white ski mask as everyone else was the most gargantuan being I have ever recognized. That’s either a roided out human or an orc thrall, judging by the club, orc.

I’m fast enough to dodge a club, and even land some counter punches to the ribs. Punches that do absolutely nothing. It isn’t long before a frying pan sized hand knocks me back. Well, time to run. I can beat him in a foot race. I waste no time heading towards another exit with Big Angry behind me. I only turn when I hear the screams of someone behind me. I turn to realize it was no longer giving chase, instead it was actually pulling the arm off of one of The Wererats.

The acidic burn of stomach acid scratches my throat, and the bitter taste of half-digested food and beer fills my mouth as I puke right in the middle of a fight for life and death. I’m not sure if the tears come because of the lasting pain from my injuries, the puke or the hopelessness of my situation.

I don’t get the time to think as my shoulder is filled with an intense burning sensation that brings me to the ground. The pain is too much to take my hand off the wound and see what it was. I realize I’m shot, as a short man, who had removed his mask, stood over me with a gun in his hand aimed at my head. Mom is going to be disappointed. You would think she was Heather B the way she would yell for people to put the Glocks down at those rallies; still her son is now a victim of gun violence.

More blood lands on my face as a hand burst through his chest and he screams out in pain, trying to fight away from the clutches of death. As his body falls to the side, I realized it was Destiny who had saved me. She just stood there, covered in blood amidst the chaos. With everything going on she still found the time to look at me with anger, disgust, regret, I couldn’t really tell. I’ve never been great at reading facial expressions, but this one was difficult, complicated even.

“Stop lying around like a big pussy. Run, or die. Just hurry up and leave my life like always,” Destiny yelled at me over the fire alarm sound.

She took off at that crazy vampire speed, and I quickly lost track of her. Every now and then I would spot one of our attackers randomly dying or sent flying and would know it was her. She was taking out most of them while some of The Wererats were trying to take on the big one without much luck. Everyone was doing their part. Except me, I was running. Just like when I was a kid and Elias would fight my battles for me.

I focus for just a moment and gain access to my magic pocket. I toss in my bloody hoody and backpack that contains my laptop which is probably in a thousand pieces. I feel the handle of my blade materialize in my right hand. It all takes only a few seconds to transpire.

I spot a vampire drinking the blood of a fallen Wererate, no doubt drinking to heal an injury. I don’t hesitate in the run up or even as I lift the blade with my good arm. But before I can drop it, I hesitate. I think about Mercer, and the vampire I killed before. Vicky said I was still good but I didn’t feel that way anymore. The vampire realized what was happening and moved to the side. Faster than a regular person, but not the super speed Destiny moved with. I slip in the blood and fall with nothing to break my fall but the body of the dead Wererat. For a moment I looked into his dead eyes and saw terror still there. I rolled over and wildly swing at the vampire’s neck. He didn’t turn into dust either, just cold black blood silently dripping across the blade again. I stand and noticed the vampire’s leg was broken. That’s why I was able to get him by surprise.

I hear what sounds like a thunder clap that draws my attention. Off in the distance I’m witnessing as the big arm ripper from earlier is clashing with what appears to be a giant version of Jerry from the old Tom and Jerry cartoons. That’s when I remember Lynn is a wererat, an actual wererat. I thought she would be small, but she’s huge. She uses her claws to keep distance between them before diving in with her teeth. There’s no scream as she bites into the arm but there’s pain as it tries to fight her off. When she’s finally knocked away the arm of the jumpsuit is gone and mangled mess of blood, bone and white fur remain. Okay, so that isn’t an Orc and a werewolf wouldn’t need a club. What the hell is that?

A lot of attention has been drawn away from the battle. Most Wererats and thralls have stopped fighting to nurse their injuries and watch as Lynn takes on giant fur thing. The vampires are mostly being kept busy while fighting Destiny. She’s got the advantage on them in skill and ability, but they have the numbers. Still, there’s a few skirmishes taking place.

I do what I can, act as a distraction. I can’t fight at all in this condition, but I can be enough of a pain in the ass that The Wererats can get a few shots in. It isn’t long before I have four maybe five of them following me and picking off any of our lone attackers. Slowly we’re evening the field after the sneak attacks.

I slam my blade down onto the skull of another vampire feasting on a Wererat who was screaming out in pain. At least, I thought it was a vampire, until the warm red blood sprays and the bright brain matter sticks to my blade as the body falls to the ground.

“Good kill mate,” one of The Wererats says as they quickly move on.

Six, I’ve killed six vampires total, most were on their way out or were surprise attacks. But, just like that, I had killed my first human. I’m a murderer now, and didn’t even think twice about attacking. Is it self-defense? No, I wasn’t being attacked. But I saved someone else, she would have been saved by one of the others. I’m a killer. What do I do with the body? The vampires dispose of themselves. How do I get rid of a human body? Do I dump it in a river? Burn it?

A gurgled screeching sound brings me back to the fight. Lynn had just been sent crashing through the fountain. The mermaid statues spitting water had all ceased to exist and now a giant, but shrinking rat sat in their place. Soon there was no rat, just Lynn, naked and still willing to fight. A series of small explosions drew everyone’s attention upward. The opaque skylight had been cracked and was beginning to shatter into millions of tiny pieces and fall to the ground.

“Retreat,” one of our attackers yelled as they rushed for the doors.

As sunlight filtered in screams of vampires began to fill the mall. I had seen enough dead vampires now to believe it was a joke about some turning to dust in the sunlight. I guess I had never seen any in the sun before because they were starting to explode with a tiny popping sound. First those that were already dead. Then those who couldn’t get through the sealed doors. Slowly one by one the screams stopped as each vampire was left as nothing more than ashes to sweep up. Many of the thralls dropped, likely they were following their vampire masters to hell.

Some managed to flee after the big monster broke through one of the doors, the others were left unconscious where they were. Any other time the sun washing over me would be a real mood booster, but today it had done nothing but illuminate what we had been done in the dark. Nearly every inch of the mall showed some kind of damage, from smudged walls to shattered glass, small fires and the blood; there was so much blood. Then there’s me, wishing for a shower that I know could wash away the blood, sweat, tears and even brain matter that now stuck to my body. But a shower could never wash away what I had done here today.

3.39 - I Seen a Man Die

They told me Mercer would be okay thanks to some kind of magic. I know it’s a lie, I saw his intestines through a fist sized peephole in his stomach. There is absolutely no way he could have survived that. Besides, we left him behind. I know they’re just trying to calm my nerves, but it won’t work. I know what I saw, I remember everything from those moments. The smell, the feel, the sounds, everything is tattooed on my brain for all of eternity.

The Wererats brought me back to their hideout to recover. I just want to leave this place and go home. Nobody is willing to let me out; I can’t blame them, my hands haven’t stopped shaking since that night. Elias calls to check in on me every now and then but he has no clue of what really happened to me. I can’t even remember what lie I told him. Pretty sure he thinks I’m just staying with Destiny and that couldn’t be further from the truth. She looked at me a few times, but every time she did it was nothing but pity in her eyes. Not empathy, or sorrow, it just looked like she was disgusted, but took pity on me. I’m worthless to her. Maybe because we still didn’t get that damned cup she’s chasing after. I watched a man die, and I killed a vampire, but all she can think about is revenge. I didn’t help her get revenge, therefore I am nothing.

I watched Mercer die, looked his corpse right in the eyes as the life vanished. I didn’t see any fear, or anger. I didn’t even see his face at peace. I saw shock, as if he was sure it couldn’t happen to him. But it did, and I didn’t do anything to try stopping it. I’m just as bad as the murderer. I’ve never felt anyone else’s blood before and I still feel like I’m covered in it. I’ve had showers and baths but I can’t get it off me. I still feel the warm splatter of Mercer’s blood across my face. I still smell the stench of that cold vampire blood soaking through the flesh of my fingers and into my bones. I can’t shake it. The blood is part of me now. People keep coming by to tell me the first kill is the hardest.

I once told Destiny that I wanted us to spend forever together. In response she told me that humans don’t live forever, so I should adjust my expectations. She was right, even if it took all of this happening for me to realize it. I was nothing to her but a play thing. I got played, and I guess I deserved that for putting so much faith into us. I really thought we might be together forever, but I guess I was just fun to play with until her real goals were in front of her.

“We need to strike back, a few well-placed light grenades could take out a lot of them,” one of the Wererats drunkenly slurs to another at the bar.

“I say we just rip the fucking house apart in the middle of the day. Watch them burn and scurry,” the second responds.

“I want to kill them myself,” a third joins in.

Again, I try to make my way out of their little clubhouse of doom and gloom. There’s nothing in here for me anymore, I guess there never was. Nobody is around to stop me this time, they’re all having a vigil for Mercer, I wasn’t invited. I’ve heard the whispers. The people who don’t lie to me about him being alive blame me for his death. There really isn’t any in-between on the subject, at least nobody wants revenge on me. I suppose killing the vampire was enough to spare me that, but not enough that everyone wants to keep me around.

I make it to the parking lot and Destiny is there smoking a cigarette. I don’t know how to feel when I see her. Rage washes over me, but so does sadness. I’m not sure if I’m feeling betrayal, resentfulness, maybe even revulsion.

“What’s going on killer,” Destiny laughs as she spots me.

I usually like her good-natured teasing, but this isn’t that; this is just hurtful. It’s strange how I used to love that about her, now I hate it. Has she always been so mean spirited? Is this what it feels like when you don’t love someone anymore? I want to respond with some witty comment of my own, fight back, but I can’t find it in me. I just keep walking to my car. Her laughter cuts deep as I realize I don’t even have my keys. They’re back inside, with my backpack. It’s like my head is spinning lately, I just can’t get it together.

“Wish I knew you were an asshole when I met you,” I mumble as I walk past her.

In an instant she’s in front of me, “who the fuck do you think you are?”

“Go away,” I try to step around her.

“You kill one vampire, and suddenly you think you’re hot shit,” she asks.

“You’re heartless. Did you know that,” has she always just been a bully?

“Vampire, comes with the territory.”

“I don’t get why you act like I did something to hurt you.”

“Maybe you did,” she walks away.

What the fuck is she talking about? I don’t want to be a mass murderer to get revenge on some vampires I don’t even know? That hurt her? This is stupid. I don’t get it, I don’t know how Elias does this all the time. I just need to get my keys and my bag, then I’m done with this world forever. I’ll go back to making websites for local businesses and weirdos who just have to tell the world how they feel.

3.38 - Mission Impossible

Destiny told me to live or leave with it. I chose to leave with it. I haven’t spoken to her in three days. I don’t think Elias could save this relationship with all of his expertise. It was great while it lasted but, all good things come to an end. I blamed myself for the last time we got into a fight, I accused her of using me with no proof. Now I know she just uses me, and doesn’t ever think about how I feel. I left a few things at her place, mostly hoodies. They smell like her now, and I don’t really want them back anymore. I was done with her and this whole revenge mission.

Then I got a phone call from Vicky. She explained how The Wererats needed this job, because they were going broke. The empty store they’re housed in, used to be up and running. It was a variety store for fencing products, but things had been slow. They needed a job like this to bring some credibility back to their name, and merchandise to their store. The Wererats had been nothing but nice to me, and they aren’t all blood thirsty killers. They settled on no killing unless it’s in self-defense. I can live with that. I can’t live with trying to wipe out an entire blood line.

Everyone took different rides to get to the mansion, I rode with my partner for this, Mercer Evans. A high elf, with a high self-esteem who can’t stop telling me how he’s the fastest safe cracker in the Great Lakes region. I don’t know if there’s any validity to that, I’ve never met a safe cracker before. I’ve never even met a professional thief before I knew these people. Now I’m part of a heist team. This isn’t anywhere near as exciting as the movies had make it seem.

We arrive at the back of the home and are welcomed by a small forest. The reason they told me to wear long sleeves and jeans makes sense now. Some of the trees have thorns but Mercer doesn’t seem to be phased by any of this. He traverses the land as if he’s known it for his entire life. Meanwhile, I’m trying not to lose sight of him or get stabbed by too many of these thorns. I didn’t even know trees had thorns.

“How you doing back there,” Mercer asks.

“Just trying to avoid the thorns.”

“Good, because they’re magic. They’ll give you one hell of a trip. Don’t want you freaking out on me rookie. I can’t have you making me look bad,” as if the thinning but dyed hair doesn’t make him look bad.

We finally get through the trees and spot the home, if you can call it that. A giant pool larger than any public pool I’ve ever seen flanked by a tennis court on the left, and basketball court on the right. Massive arched windows, all tinted, but magnificent in design. The house had been modernized but relics of the past remain. A shadow is cast across the back yard by a demonic looking gargoyle resembling an eagle.

A pair of bolt cutters pops the security box with no problem. The USB cable settles in neatly on my computer. I can’t find any live security camera feeds so I just shut the alarm off. I suppose they wouldn’t want one of their vampire massacres on camera. I hope I’m not a vampire massacre.

The storm cellar doors screech and pop as they open. The neglect is clear as flakes of rust stick to my gloves long after I let go of the handles. The stairway is dimly lit by the oversized flashlight Mercer had brought. Everything about him screams he has a massive ego but overcompensating for low self-esteem. With that kind of combination, you either turn into Mike Tyson or the guy pushing forty who tries to pick up high school students. I wonder which one Mercer is, probably the high school daycare kind.

Metal clinks and taps together, leading me to peer over Mercer’s shoulder. He’s picking a lock on a large metal door. I could have sworn storm cellars didn’t lead to the house. Then again, this is an old house, and the storm cellar is probably just the basement. They told me that already, this is why I’m not a thief. It doesn’t take long before the muffling of a door dragging through dirt and occasionally bumping stone welcomes us to the basement.

The vault is right in the center of the room, large magnificent and sparkling silver. The only thing modern in the basement. Mercer tosses me two big black duffel bags and orders me to fill them with whatever looks valuable while he works the safe. Even without the safe, there’s enough stuff in here to make a person very rich, and this isn’t even their main base of operations.

There are plenty of stray jewels and magnificent pieces of jewelry. A thick layer of dust rubs off on my gloves as I snag some gold and silver bars. Relics of dead vampire hunters have to be worth something. I toss the first bag into my magic pocket and go to work on the next. Mirrors and guns etched with heavy engravings, books that nearly crumble at my touch. Most importantly, cash, lots of real cash. Mom would be ashamed of me, but I might be a very rich man depending on how we split the money. That would make her very happy.

I toss my second bag into the pocket and make my way back to Mercer, hopefully he’s almost done. My own screams stop me from finishing my thought as I lie against the basement wall. Vampire, I couldn’t spot her, or even hear her.

“Mercer, behind you,” I call out hoping he hears me.

Mercer turns and draws a wand from his pants pocket. A blast of light slams into a bookshelf but doesn’t touch the vampire. He blasts off another but she clutches his wrist. He refuses to scream but still tries to fight back with punches and kicks. Hachoir de guerre move into my hands without a second thought. I slash at the vampire's ankles and cleave into the spine. This is what Destiny taught me for, survival. Injured it turns to face me, but I don’t hesitate, I drive one of the blades into it’s heart and the movement stops. I expect her to turn into dust right away but she doesn’t. Cold black blood covers my hands and smells of death. But there’s warm blood too, on my face. Sticky and thick, but I don’t feel hurt at all. It’s obviously Mercer’s.

“Mercer, get up,” I shake his body but don’t get a response. “Mercer, this isn’t funny.”

I try to hold together the torn pieces of flesh across his abdomen. It can’t be that bad, he didn’t even scream. I just need to make sure everything stays inside until help comes. Then he’ll be fine. I’m sure they heard my screams and will be on the way.

“Mercer stop joking, you’re not even hurt that bad. We’re going to get a little magic on there, and you’ll be good as new.”

Two members of the guild grab me and pull me away, but I hold onto Mercer. We can’t leave him behind. He needs medical attention. I can’t believe they’re leaving him behind.

“Guys stop, Mercer needs us,” I plead with them as I try to break free.

“He knew the risk, one of them says coldly dragging me past the tree line.”

3.37 - Choices

In my life I’ve played a lot of games. Board games, video games, sports games and so on. Planning always goes the same way in them all. Get a sheet of paper, a big board or maybe even a map. Get a few representatives of a group or highly talented individuals involved. Then you set the tone, here’s what’s happening, here’s what we’re going to do. This is how we finish and this is where we regroup. I’m quickly learning, real life doesn’t really mix with fantasy. At least it didn’t, until I fell in love with a vampire at first sight. What has my life become?

Lynn is way more focused, and less fun than she was when we met yesterday. Sobriety tends to have that effect on people, but she actually seems competent. She’s got examples and references as to why each step of her plan will work. She’s been leading for 33 years and plans to retire soon. I’m just hoping this isn’t like a cop movie where she says she’s getting too old, then gets shot.

The actual plan is simple, we break into their mansion. We take it, broad daylight while they’re asleep. The plan gets complicated because The Wererats want to take more than just the chalice. They want to break into the vault. It’s a high-tech alarm, but the vault is something one of The Wererats could crack. This is where I’m supposed to come in. According to the plan I’ll sneak down with one of The Wererats as security while they break into the vault. They could outsource it to their usual contact, but they figure I’m cheaper. Despite me telling them I’m not an expert at cracking vaults or alarms they assure me I’ll be ready to go with a few days of preparation.

What I’m scared of most is killing, it wasn’t on my list of worries prior to this. I hadn’t thought about the fact that we may still be discovered. The Wererats aren’t fighters, but they can survive and have plenty of anti-vampire stuff. Even if they aren’t human, I can’t help but think about what happens when a vampire dies. I was in the group of us that suggested contain any threat or alert everyone and flee before regrouping. I was surprised when Destiny disagreed with me. She didn’t care if we killed people, because they’re, “vampire assholes.” But I think vampires are people too; same as elves, goblins, orcs, werewolves and every other creature I’ve met or seen lately. A conclusion that I’ve come to on my own, they’re sentient and just as capable as humans.

“If it was up to me, we’d just kill them all while they sleep. Maybe place sunlight runes around the home that trigger at midnight or something. Just to make sure they don’t come back later,” Destiny looks me in the eye as she suggests.

“That’s the afro firecracker I remember,” Lynn’s boisterous laugh has already begun to irritate me.

“We’re not murders. I’m not even a thief. I do internet security, and build websites on the side. You all steal from museums. Why would waste time trying to murder everyone? We get in, we get out,” I speak against her.

I can’t even remember what Destiny and I had fought about before, but I think this one might be worse. I’m not even sure why I’m involved in it. I wonder if Elias has any other tricks in his bag to help a relationship survive a big fight, because that’s where we’re heading. In the end we don’t even get a solution to the kill or no kill rule. Just a lot of debate with Lynn promising to make the final call. For now, we’re all supposed do our prep. For me that means learning about alarm systems. But I need to speak with Destiny first.

I don’t even get a chance to speak to her; right away as she’s off discussing something with Lynn. Instead a wood elf named Vycy, or Vicky for humans who can’t get the correct pronunciation, promises to email everything I’ll need to learn. Destiny and I don’t get to speak until we’re in the car a few hours later. Still, the subject hasn’t left my mind.

“Are we good,” I ask her as she drives.

“Yeah, everything is fine.”

“You sure, because you seemed kind of blood thirsty back there. And you got upset when I disagreed with you,” I’ve gotten better about not beating around the bush.

“I just feel like you shouldn’t have provided input on something you don’t really know about,” she shrugs.

“I know I don’t want to kill anyone, and that’s enough for me.”

“Then don’t kill anyone but if I’ve got a chance to wipe a bunch of them off the map, don’t make that decision for me,” she almost sounds like she’s threatening me.

“I figure we should discuss everything between us.”

“Us? There is no us.”

“I’m your boyfriend, in every way but you won’t just say it.”

“I won’t say it because it isn’t true.”

“Okay, if that’s how you feel, I guess I need to do some soul searching,”

“You should do some soul searching, instead of acting like a love-sick puppy expecting me to change your life,” that hurt me to hear.

“But, I’m still not killing. I don’t think you should either. It’s almost like you’re possessed by this idea of revenge and aren’t thinking straight.”

“I didn’t ask you help me with this,” Destiny responds.

“You didn’t give me much choice either,” I park in front of her apartment building. “You led me to the mall believing it was a date, or just friends hanging out. Right? Then you volunteered me to hack an alarm system because I make the computer do crazy stuff. Right?”

“You want choices,” she nods her head to herself. “I’ll give you choices. I’m looking for revenge. I’m going to take that chalice. I’m going to kill every little peon in the house that worships some idea of an ass backwards family. Then I’m going to burn down the house,” she gets out the car.

“That isn’t a choice,” I respond as she walks past my window.

“Oh, that’s right, choices. Pick your next move, you can leave or live with it.”

3.36 - THE Wererats

I couldn’t sleep last night. I was too worried about Destiny, but too afraid to go see what happened. I usually don’t go to sleep on Friday nights because I’m up playing video games, but this was different. It was fear keeping me awake. What if they followed me? I could be next, Elias is sleeping on the other side of the apartment, he could be next. I’ve gotten pretty good with the hachoir de guerre, not enough to be an expert, but good enough. Hoping I could defend myself with them. I held them with fear all night, practicing around my bedroom. It looked like I’m hoping someone would intrude and give me a reason to test my abilities; but inside I’m terrified.

Then she just pulls up outside and tells me come get breakfast with her. I watch as she just devours three breakfast burritos, as I struggle to finish mine. When I asked what happened, she just says they couldn’t attack her due to some stupid rule. The whole afternoon seemed like a blur as we wandered through the mall like old people. I keep trying to covertly check her for scars but I can’t see any. Maybe she really didn’t have to fight because she’s in a great mood.

“Alright, so this is where we’re meeting The Wererats,” she stops in front of an empty store.

“I’m sorry, I spaced on all of that. Did you say Wererats?”

“Yeah, like werewolves, but big rats.”

“What?”

“Did you think werewolves were the only Lycans?”

“Yes.”

“Well, there’s wolves, bears, rats, boars, lions, tigers, so many more around the world. If a culture finds strength in an animal, there’s probably a Lycan associated with the area. Why do you think California has a bear on the flag?”

“I... but rats?”

“Yeah.”

“Why rats?”

“Because thieves like rats, they’re sneaky,” she shrugs as if this is common knowledge.

“So we’re meeting wererats?”

“No, THE Wererats,” she emphasizes her words.

“At an empty store in the deserted part of the mall?”

“It’s not empty if you have a key.”

She turns the lock and the door opens. We step into the empty store, judging by the space, it was probably a shoe store at some point. We make our way to a door separating the small display area from the back room. Behind the door there seems to be some kind of lounge set up in a much larger space. I’m entirely confused as there seems to be close to thirty people just hanging around. A few watching TV, others drinking, some just reading or working by themselves. I’d probably be more surprised if I hadn’t spent the last few months with Destiny visiting secret magic places with Destiny. Libraries, theaters, blood banks, grocery stores, even websites and TV Channels. This, I can deal with this. It’s just a regular old secret door.

“So are you telling me, all these people are wererats,” I ask Destiny, surprised by the number.

“No, these are The Wererats. But there’s only one wererat in this group as far as I know.”

“You realize how confusing that sounds right?”

“Well if it’ll help you remember, I’m the only one who transforms,” a woman built like a strongman with black hair and dressed in flamboyant colors injects herself in the conversation.

“What,” I ask, these last 24 hours have been hard on me.

“I’m Lynn Barbara Cooper, wererat and leader of The Wererats,” she extends his hand.

“Aren’t you all thieves? Why are you wearing such bright colors,” I shake her hand and she grips mine tightly.

“I’m off today,” she laughs in my face as if she just said something funny.

“Long time no see,” Destiny hugs Lynn.

“I am just so confused,” I inadvertently whisper to myself.

“Got you one that’s wet behind the ears,” Lynn laughs hard in our faces.

“He’s a fast learner,” she smiles.

“Thanks, you,” My confusion is adding nothing. I decide to retreat from the conversation and let Destiny talk with Lynn.

“What brings you back around? Haven’t seen you in years,” Lynn smiles.

“Need to get back in the game, for one last job,” Destiny pulls out her phone.

“Well, let me take a look,” Lynn glances at the photo of the chalice. “Now that is a risky job you got planned.”

“You’ll get your cut,” Destiny smiles coyly.

“You plan to sell it?”

“Of course, what do I need it for?”

“You vamps are a crazy bunch,” Lynn gives another hearty laugh.

“You lycans ain’t so different,” she joins in with her.

I laugh so as not to be left out, and they instantly stop, “so what’s the plan,” I make myself useful.

“Well, first thing is first. You can’t do a job without being friends. Destiny is an old friend. We don’t know you. So, we drink, and fuck until we’re friends. Then we plan,” Lynn doesn’t laugh.

“I don’t want...to fuck,” the words leave my mouth in pained confusion.

“You don’t have to fuck me. I’ll watch you two fuck,” Lynn lets out another boisterous laugh.

“You always offer drinking and fucking, and nobody ever takes you up on the fucking,” Destiny laughs at her.

“Well in that case,” Lynn takes a deep breath, “we drink,” she yells out to everyone in the lounge before limping off towards the bar.

“What is this place,” I immediately ask Destiny.

“A thieves’ guild,” she responds.

“There are still guilds,” like a video game?

“Yeah, a little smaller but they still exit, plenty of them around. Shadow Syndicate is essentially one big guild, but there’s alternatives.”

It doesn’t take Lynn long to return with big oval shaped glasses, some gold liquid that doesn’t seem to bubble fills each one. I take a deep breath, expecting tequila, I hate tequila. Instead, I’m met with a sweet drink, almost like milk chocolate.

“What is this,” I ask feeling intoxicated almost immediately.

“Special brew, stole the formula from a wood elf when I was a youngster. I’ll share it with you if the job goes well,” Lynn smiles and raises her glass.

Destiny follows her lead and I do the same. It isn’t long before every glass in the place is raised and we’re all waiting on Lynn to say something.

“Tonight, we drink, for in the morning we plan and, soon we’ll take everything we want and more.” Lynn drinks and The Wererats cheer.

3.35 - Respect

Another night, another spectacular ball room. I’m not sure if Destiny enjoys these, or she’s still on the revenge mission. I haven’t spotted the murderous look in her eyes lately, but I wouldn’t put it past her. We’ve gotten closer than I could have ever imagined. Still, she doesn’t tell me about a lot of things. She didn’t even think to mention she had dated Chloe until she was able to call me bisexual and make jokes. She was excited when she found the information about the Chalice, but then didn’t bring it up anymore.

I’ve learned that each of these events is hosted by one of the families in the city. The colors are always different, representative of each house. Tonight, the Marson House hosts the event. The colors are a faded red and bright yellow. It looks like a fancy McDonalds to me, but supposedly the red is for courage and the yellow is for enlightenment. After meeting a few thralls at these events, they all seem the same; barely any sense of personality remains in them. They’re mostly around just waiting on their masters to pass out orders. They’re all so obsessed with pleasing their masters and seem to have abandoned any interests or dreams of their own. Did I really want to be one? I was out of my mind.

I’m just glad she lets me wear sneakers now. I’m going to have to buy a tuxedo if I have to go to another one of these; rental fees are starting to stack up. I do wonder how much you need to drink before you turn into an alcoholic, because I’m starting to drink a lot at these events. She wanders off with the other vampires and does whatever she has to, and I sit here, drinking as the thralls tell me how important they are to their masters.

“Walk with me, we need to make an impression,” Destiny places a hand on my shoulder and whispers in my ear.

“Okay, what’s the deal,” I follow her.

“Well, you’re going to need to run out of here. Don’t be afraid to stab someone.”

“What’s going on?”

“You wouldn’t understand.

“When should I run?”

“You’ll know when to run. Just know I’ll pick you up tomorrow around noon,” she kisses me on the cheek.

She leads me through the party, not really in any real direction or towards any location, just leading. In the time that I’ve known Destiny she’s never lacked any confidence. Still, she’s moving through the crowd right now with more than I’ve ever seen her with. I’d honestly call it arrogance. She takes a drink from a waiter, sips it, then spits it out. She shakes her head and returns it to his tray before continuing. The thralls remain silent, they know their roles. Subservience to not just their master but all vampires are important. Destiny confuses them, because she’s Adze, she’s not one of their own. She demands respect, but they don’t want to respect her.

“Can’t believe they let her walk through here with her head held high,” I hear someone in the crowd whisper.

“In the past, her kind wouldn’t even be allowed in here,” another comment.

“Slaves who played with magic beyond their control, gained all that power, but still more worthless than the dirt they walk on,” a woman whispers to her master who laughs.

At first, I thought it was just because she was Adze, but this is good old-fashioned racism. I forget some of these vampires were around when slavery was still a thing. They probably recruit thralls like them, those with a burning passion for the old days. The special Midwest brand of racism. Smile in your face, never call you Nigger but never really see you as human either. The same Midwest racism that had Martin Luther King leave Chicago feeling defeated. Racism is still alive, especially with these decrepit old vampires. They don’t even conceal their hunger for the past. Some of them probably had to let slaves go after the civil war.

I realize she had been leading us back towards the door. She really does expect me to make a run for it. I bend down to make sure my shoes are tied tight as she discusses something with a vampire. For a moment I could have sworn she demanded a drink from the thrall. I couldn’t have heard that right, because Destiny doesn’t drink directly from people.

“I would never let your dirty lips drink from my thrall,” the uptight old man says.

“Very well,” Destiny turns towards me and winks.

A lot flows through my mind in that second. Dirty lips was not so coded racism. I’ve seen vampires share thralls all through these events. The wink lets me know I should run. I also wonder what Destiny is about to do. I get my answer as I watch her turn quickly and slit the vampires throat.

“I will not be disrespected by some old fledgling vampire,” she shouts.

In the moment of chaos, I run as screams fill the room. Destiny doesn’t budge as I look back, but I get out of there. I’d just slow her down if a fight happened. I need to run, because I trust her, even if I don’t believe she could win the fight. But I don’t hear any fighting as the door closes behind me. I don’t even buckle my seatbelt or check my mirrors, just pull out and hope she’s okay. She’ll be okay, she always has been.

3.34 – Double Date

“Oh no, I can smell her,” Destiny shakes her head.

“Smell who?”

“Your brother’s girlfriend.”

Elias and his date had just walked into the restaurant and Destiny was getting bad scents from her which is something I didn’t know she could do? Could she smell me when we would train? I could be a little strong smelling after those sessions. I know Elias he gets around, but not usually with anyone that can be considered unhygienic.

“What exactly are you smelling.”

“Sex.”

“Oh, well they’re adults.”

“No, I smell sex and another man.”

“Oh.”

“Yeah.”

“That’s not good.”

“You need to tell him,” she suggests as they get closer.

“No. You smelt it, you...delt it,” I refuse to be the one.

When Elias was twenty-two, he found out the girl he had been with for three years, had another boyfriend. Sometimes she’d be with them back-to-back on the same day. It broke his heart. Ever since then, he’s been in relationship after relationship. Some of them are even situationships, and plenty of one-night stands. But, he never cheated on anyone as far as I know. I just hope he uses protection.

“You sure it isn’t him?”

“Does your brother like guys too? Does it run in your family?”

“Not as far as I can tell and shut up. It was one time, years ago and you keep bringing it up the same way my dad does,” I argue with her getting quieter as they’re greeted by the waiter and directed to the table.

“He just smells like art supplies and shampoo. Good shampoo, with lemons and berries.”

“Are you sure? I’ve never heard you talk about...super smell.”

“Well, you never asked, and I never needed to demonstrate it.”

“Crap,” I try to find something else to stare at as they sit down.

“What are you guys over here whispering about,” Elias and his date arrive to the table.

“There’s just, such a lovely sent in the air tonight,” Destiny starts.

“I hadn’t noticed anything,” Elias’ date comments, Destiny fights a laugh quietly.

“Well everyone, this is Zoelandra,” Elias gives a lackluster introduction.

“You can call me Zoe or Zoey,” she smiles and fluffs the loose black curls of her hair.

“Should we start with an appetizer? I hear they have great spinach dip” I try to play it cool.

“No, we should start with wine,” Zoey suggests.

Things don’t fly off the hinges like I expect. I’m constantly playing defense and trying to change direction from Destiny’s hints about Zoey cheating. I don’t know why I’m calling her Zoey, I don’t know her like that, and she’s sleeping around on my brother. I don’t have the best brotherly instincts but I don’t have to let Elias go through this. I can do something about this one. I just don’t know what.

“I need to use the powder room, excuse me,” Destiny stands up in an overly polite manner.

“Oh, I’ll come too,” Zoey follows.

“Dude, you’re being awkward tonight,” Elias downs his third glass of wine before the main course arrives.

“I’m always awkward,” is all I can come back with, forcing myself to finish a second glass of wine.

“Nah, something isn’t right. You’re hiding something. You’re a terrible liar. Not a dishonest bone in your body.”

“I’m not being dishonest,” I pour another glass of wine for myself.

“Go easy, you’re a lightweight and you’re driving.”

“Nah, Destiny is driving,” because she can’t get drunk off regular wine.

“Then drink up and loosen those lips,” he laughs.

“I’ll drink but there are no secrets.”

“Then try to keep up,” he pours another glass for himself.

“Is that a challenge,” I can’t win, I don’t drink regularly but need to change the topic.

I’ve never been on a double date before, but I’m pretty sure this isn’t how they usually go. Elias and I spend most of dinner trying to out drink each other and discussing our partners. He’d talk about how great Zoey was at playing piano. I’d make something up about Destiny being a classically trained violinist. Elias, Destiny and I were having fun with the game. She played along, adding to the story, but after an hour it was clear Zoey was feeling inadequate. That just gave Destiny more reason to play along. She’s become pretty defensive of Elias, as if he were her own brother after meeting him so many times.

“I have to piss like a race horse,” Elias rudely interrupts Zoey’s joke.

“Oh, okay. I’ll finish when you come back,” Zoey feels slighted for the umpteenth time tonight.

“Don’t worry about it. Walk with me, make sure I don’t get lost bro,” Elias holds a hand out for me.

“Take care of your big brother,” Destiny jokes nudging me.

I laugh and take Elias’ hand. Admittedly the whole thing is funny. I always remember taking Elias’ hand and leading him to the bullies who were messing with me. I wasn’t much of a fighter, but I was a good distraction while he punched them out. We made a great team. When he’d take my hand, he’d be leading me to doing something I’d usually avoid like a basketball tournament. I don’t know how we won that tournament. We were both pretty good, but some of those other teams were way better. We just had the communication. Elias and I always communicate.

“So why have you been acting strange all night,” Elias asks as soon as we’re into the bathroom.

“I don’t want you to be upset.”

“I promise I won’t be.”

“Destiny said Zoey is cheating on you. There’s another guy. The team has got more than one star player. The chicken has more than one coop,” that came out blunter than I meant.

“How did Destiny know?”

“She recognized her. Said she saw her kissing another guy at a bar she goes to for lunch sometimes,” who’s a bad liar now Elias?

“Wow, and you guys weren’t going to tell me,” Elias laughs.

“She was throwing out hints, I was trying to tell you without hurting your feelings.”

“Aww, you wanted to protect me,” Elias hugs me, he’s always loving, more loving when drunk.

“Yeah, so what do we do?”

“Oh, me and you are leaving through the kitchen,” we’ll tip the waiters on the way.

“I’ll text Destiny. She’ll get out on her own,” we can read each other’s minds sometimes.

We leave the bathroom and make sure we aren’t spotted by Zoey. I hand the waiter sixty dollars, which is less than what I had planned to spend on our meal. She leads us through the kitchen and out the back door, assuring us she’ll catch Zoey. I send Destiny a text message explaining the situation. She responds with a semicolon and a parenthesis. It doesn’t take more than a few minutes for her to open the driver’s side door. All the laughter reminds me of Elias and I as kids getting away with something devious, it also lets me know that Destiny is still in there, and hasn’t gone insane searching for revenge.

3.33 – Libraries are Magical

I’ve been to a dozen different libraries, hundreds, maybe thousands of times. The money for textbooks wasn’t always freely available. Most colleges keep a few prior editions of the textbooks behind the counter. There’s always a way if you’re desperate. Still, I’m shocked that Destiny is leading me through the central library as if I’ve never been here before.

Every now and then, we take a turn. We should be moving in a circle but it seems like our path is forever changing. She promised there were magical spaces hidden in plain view, that my mind just wasn’t able to see them. I’m starting to think she may be right, especially now that we stand in front of a pair of ornate double doors that I’ve never seen before. Intricate symbols are etched into each door, mirrored onto the other. There’re no repeated symbols beyond the mirroring and it doesn’t seem to have any real method to the designs. Still, it feels as if something powerful awaits behind the doors.

She simply waves a hand in front of the doors and they open. We head through the doors, and there seems to be an equally large, if not larger, library here. Mostly elves, a few humans, some Goblins, Dwarves and even a few Orcs. There was indeed a magical library hidden away. Destiny makes her way to the front counter to get whatever we came here looking for.

I take the moment to explore and observe. None of the books seem to be in any real order. The Dewey Decimals System has no place here. Instead people seem to approach small orbs that give them information before they scurry off to their book. There’re no computers, or microfiche readers. Instead there are massive tomes placed on some of the tables, I’m not sure how a single person would move them alone. Each one appears to be handwritten and older than anything I’ve ever seen up close. I’m not a master of languages, but I recognize some Latin in one, some Spanish in another and even hieroglyphics in a third.

“I got what we need,” Destiny comes back with a book bearing a large decorative “L” on the front.

“What’s that?”

“I told you, they like their little kingdoms. They keep written histories of the founding of their houses and all that. This book, has information about the Marson, Dynasty,” she uses air quotes over dynasty. “Everything how the very first was turned, each subsequent leader. Traditions, allies, enemies and everything else.”

“That sounds as if it is more historical than anything we can actually use.”

“You would think, but like I keep telling you, they hold onto the past way too much.”

The first head, Letcher Marson was a merchant who arrived in the American South from England. He was quickly married and set up shop. Soon he owned several slaves, and was deemed a success. Crazy how owning slaves meant you were successful back then. Soon a group of locals extorted him for funds and when he refused he was beaten, and bitten. They were vampires, who thought they had killed him, but he lived. He became stronger in secret, eventually killing them. Then he moved on to found his own town. It makes for a great story, except the whole slave owner thing.

Another interesting story, John Humphry Noyes was one of theirs. He led sex a cult, they didn’t call it that, but that’s what it was. His cult allowed Charles J. Guiteau into his cult. But the man was so insufferable they tried to get him to leave for years. They also wouldn’t turn Charles into a vampire. Charles later went on to murder President James A. Garfield. For some reason, all of their stories seem to start happy and end in something bad. Not that sex cult is good, but they weren’t hurting anyone except themselves. That’s probably not a good attitude to take towards cults.

“I got it,” Destiny smiles.

“What did you get?”

“An artifact within reach. The Chalice of Metamorphosis is the sacred artifact for their local chapter. If we take it while Chloe is in town, she’ll come to us.”

“What does it do?”

“Legend says if one of them drinks from the chalice it will allow them to use magic.”

“Can’t you use magic?”

“Different kind of vampire. I told you this, you weren’t paying attention,” she pulls out a polaroid camera.

“So, do they do rituals with this thing or what?”

“Probably mostly for show. Things lose powers over the years, especially if corrupted by evil.”

“Are you serious,” I can’t help but laugh as she takes a picture of the page.

“What? It’s for research in case I need to reference it later,” she shakes the photo.

“But that camera, is so old.”

 “You’re being really judgmental.”

“Me?”

“Yeah,” she gets up and closes the book.

The journey out of the library is a lot smoother, we exit the doors and appear right inside the real library. Is it the real library? They’re both real. The library that I know, doesn’t have as many twists and turns on the way out. I wonder if I could get back there without Destiny. I’m curious if there were things in there that I might find useful. Maybe I’m part of some long history of wizards.

“Hey Destiny,” I stop call her back after we part ways.

“Are you sure this is a good idea?”

“What?”

“Making an enemy, or a bigger enemy of them? You’ve made them sound powerful.”

“I’m not worried, you shouldn’t be either.”

“I don’t want you to get hurt.”

“They haven’t been able to kill me so far, and I won’t let them kill you.”

“Yeah, but they haven’t been actively hunting you in the past.”

“Have some faith in me. My name is Destiny. Everyone knows you can’t run from your destiny.”

She gives me a quick kiss and heads off in the opposite direction. She doesn’t even glance back at me. Instead she pulls the picture from her purse and takes another look before tucking it away again. Part of me misses playing board games and sneaker shopping with her. It all seems so long ago now. Maybe I can get us back there somehow.

3.32 – Who is Chloe Lewis

“Chloe Lewis, is she here or not,” Destiny asks as she holds the bartender’s hand in a death grip.

“I don’t fucking know,” he shouts loudly.

“I swear I’ll crush your hand until it’s a pile of dusty meatloaf,” she threatens him.

“Hey, I really don’t think he knows,” I interrupt the interrogation.

“But he knows someone who knows,” Destiny squeezes harder.

“I don’t know I really don’t,” the bartender reaches out with his free hand.

“Don’t touch me,” she swats him away.

“Please, just let him go, he doesn’t know anything,” I try to gently guide Destiny away.

“You’re lucky I like him,” she lets him crumble to the floor in pain holding his hand gently.

“Please forget this,” I leave two hundred dollars, all my cash on the counter and rush out.

I’ve seen Destiny be rough and violent, I won’t lie. That’s part of the reason I like her, I’m just a real werido I guess. But she’s been on a warpath these last few days. I’ve seen her kill before, and she was calmer then. I don’t know what’s gotten into her, but it scares me. She’s really becoming the big bad monster that people tell their kids about.

“Well, I guess he can’t give us a hand with that one,” I get into the waiting car.

“No but if you hadn’t have interrupted me, I’m sure he would have pointed us to someone who could.

I don’t say anything on the ride back to her apartment. Something has her motivated and pissed off. The fact that she’s never acted like this, just sticks in my head; the scene in the bar repeating over and over again. I’ll find myself saying it and repeating the phrase again in ten minutes. I’ve followed along with her on missing persons jobs, and even helped with one or two. This is different, she’s facing it with an intensity that seems to be reserved for violent bounties, yet I can’t find anything about Chloe Lewis.

As we sit at the table eating Taco Bell, I’m almost afraid to ask her. I thought we were taking our relationship in a new direction. I thought we were taking things further. She still won’t call me her boyfriend, but she kisses me now. Eating in silence, just isn’t like us, and the whole thing is making my heart ache, or it can be the fake meat.

“Who is Chloe Lewis, and why is this job so important,” I just come out and ask the question.

“This isn’t a job. This is personal,” she responds coldly.

“Then what’s going on,” I ask but she remains silent. “You can tell me anything. You told me you were a vampire, and took me to vampire parties. I’m in pretty deep with your life.”

“But you aren’t ready for that side of my life. That side of my life will get you killed. I shouldn’t have even brought you with me today.”

“You’ve been training me to fight, I’ll be okay.”

“You need to train harder.”

“Or I’ll die,” I ask sarcastically.

“Exactly that.”

“Then tell me why.”

“Because you can’t deal with the vampire side of things. The real side, the real problems.”

“Well I’m already there, so talk,” I try to sound tough even if I know she could probably rip me in half if she wanted.

“Chloe Lewis is a vampire, not like me. She’s a Primeval, do you remember the difference?”

“You’ve been drilling it into my head.”

“Good, well she was a friend and brought me into her house. Adzi don’t really have houses, but Primeval vamps and those that worship them love having their own little kingdoms to rule. The arrogant fuckers need to hold on to the past. Build little empires to rule over. They need to be kings. Same deal with the Red Demon Gang, just more modern. The houses feud, the gangs fight for control. It’s all a game to them.”

“Like A Song of Ice and Fire,” I try to show I understand.

“What is that?”

“A book series, started in the 90s, there’s only like four books so far, but there’s going to be a few more.”

“What,” she genuinely seems confused, but calmer.

“You really need to take an interest in my hobbies too. You have all these books, but no fantasy novels. Pan-Africanism won’t keep you warm at night Destiny. But I will,” I raise an eyebrow.

“I was starting to think you weren’t a super nerd, but here you go.”

“I try. So how does the story end?”

“Well, she brought me into her father’s empire. I would have done anything for her, including crime. Her father’s house had built a reputation on crime for hundreds of years. Evolving to corporate espionage, but they still needed a few folks to get dirty. Break in to buildings and steal files, arson. That’s what I was willing to do for her,” Destiny pauses. “In the end, she let me take the fall for a job that went bad. I got kicked out, and every now and then, a few show up trying to kill me. That’s what you saw in the alley that night.”

“The guys in suits?”

“Yeah, if we cross paths, they’re supposed to kill me. I’ve been hard to kill.”

“Why kill you?”

“To erase me from Chloe’s history. The black stain on the pure white goddess.”

“You sound more like lovers than friends.”

“You’re one to judge.”

“I mean, you know I kissed Kesean in front of the school,” I shrug. “We’re just a bunch of bisexuals that don’t have sex,” I laugh, easing the situation.

“You remember his name?”

“He was my first kiss,” I laugh.

“Whatever, kissing a dude doesn’t make you bisexual,” she finally laughs.

“Okay, so you are? Do I need to be worried about your ex,” I joke.

“She’s supposed to be in town for business, that’s why I’ve been trying to find her.”

“I got this, I’ll hit her with the boom, pow, surprise.”

“Go home,” she finally starts to return to herself.

“Do I get a kiss? Maybe some sex? We’re sharing now,” I make my way towards the door.

“You can have a kiss if you act right,” she comes to walk me out.

“So no sex?”

“We’ve never done that, won’t start today, just go home,” she gives me a quick peck on the cheek.

“Guess I’ll go home and jerk off,” I walk out the door.

“I will disembowel you,” she jokingly threatens me.

“Been doing it since I was seventeen.”

“Late start,” she jokes.

“And an early finish too,” I call back down the hallway.

I’m glad Destiny is feeling better, but I can’t shake the feeling that this isn’t over. Nobody just has hitmen coming after them and takes it lightly. She was joking as I left, but I know she’s probably going to do something crazy. I want to hold her, tell her I love her, and want to spend the rest of my life with her, however long it may be. I think our time together might be growing short if she goes out and does something reckless.

3.31 – Six Pack Challenge

[Present Day]

I bite through the wires to the security alarm; teeth are just fine when you don’t have a pair of wire cutters with you. Somehow, I don’t think my past knowledge has carried over because that camera is still functioning and scanning the back lot. The next best thing, I’ll just cut power to the entire building. I rip out the wires and claw at the covering. It’ll look as if some animal did it when they come to get the power back on, but it’ll take them a few hours to get here. That’s all the time I need.

I don’t think I was ever good at breaking and entering, but new security features make it hard. I’m weak, and I struggle to get the door open enough for me to get inside. A nasty cut forms on my arm from scraping against the door while squeezing through, it’s been so long since I’ve been hurt, but I’m building a nice list. I’ve got cuts, bruises, burns and a slight gaping hole in my chest. I try to bend the door back into shape as best as I can but it doesn’t budge. Seems like I’m running on empty at the moment. I had a list of blood banks in the city, but this was closest and I couldn’t spare the energy to walk to any of the further centers.

Blood banks are all the same, business up front, big coolers in the back holding all the blood. Old blood is closer to the front because it has a short shelf life. The same flat paint and chairs as every waiting room, could have watched some local TV if I hadn’t cut the power. Lesson learned for the next time I suppose. I drag one of the chairs over to the counter and use it to step up. I don’t have the energy or mobility to make it over by myself.

In the back, I run across offices and donation stations before I manage to find the actual blood. Finally, I reach the cooler room. I was expecting a room with a few fridges and shelves but this is an entire walk-in freezer set to keep blood cooled. I just turn the handle as if there was no lock and it pops open when the lock breaks under pressure. I’m relieved because I couldn’t have gotten through this big door. That means I’d have to drink more rat blood to get by for a little while. Doable, but no ideal.

I take a look and find the oldest bags of blood first. This isn’t a blood bank set up to service the undead nightmares roaming the city, but one to help people. I grab a few and head over to their staff room. After searching for a while, I find a large bowl and fill it with water. I wish I could microwave it, but being room temperature is enough for me. I let the blood packs warm up in the water as I head back for more, three won’t even be enough to heal this wound. I can drink blood cold without vomiting like a lot of vampires would, but I’m not in so much of a rush that I have to rip the packs open and drink like a savage.

I remove my shirt and slice open a blood pack. The blood is still a little colder than room temperature, but it soothes the burning sensation in my throat that had become a constant since I left the fire. The chest wound begins to heal, but slowly. I relax on the couch in the break room as I continue to sip more blood. I can actually feel it circulating through my body, that’s a new feeling. I pour a little of the cold blood on my arm and it heals, but the chest wound is still moving slow. It’s healing nice with no scars, so that’s an added bonus.

The fog that’s been covering my mind starts to dissipate a little, but everything isn’t clear yet. All my knowledge of computers comes back. People, Mom, Dad, and a few faces I can’t seem to recall the names of. Did I have siblings? They might be siblings. Two faces stand out more than the others. A man with a green streak in his wild hair, but I can’t make out much else. The other is a woman, a beautiful woman, almost as if I’d been searching for her this whole time.

I drink a little more blood, and more information comes back to me, I could have totally broken that alarm system earlier, or just taken the damn security tape. Elias, that’s my big brother, he was a stoner, a painter, and a womanizer. Charlene was my big sister, she owned a hair salon, and was looking to start another. D’Andre, little brother, just finished college and was going to be a high school teacher, while trying to become a famous photographer. The younger girls were twins, my sisters, but I can’t remember their names. Bone and Pepper, Chalk and Cinnamon, the names just aren’t coming to me. They came along after I was already an adult. The only solution to that is a sixth pack of blood, but I’m pushing my limit. I need more, but I can’t overindulge or I’ll end up vomiting it all back. I need to give it time to circulate.

“Destiny,” I impulsively scream out, cutting off my other thoughts.

It was Destiny, the woman is Destiny. The love of my life, how could I have ever forgotten her? Where are the rings? The rings, I pat down my pockets furiously without finding a single thing. Our rings, I can’t believe I forgot Destiny, and lost the rings. I can never forget her again. I’d do anything for her. I wipe a tear from my eye, remembering just how much I really loved her. Without Destiny, my life would be completely different, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

“Destiny,” I say her name again, just because I like the way it feels in my mouth, “Destiny,” I repeat it, trying to summon up more visions and memories of her. Unfortunately, it seems this is as far as my memories go for the moment.
